I find specific planning of distances and timing difficult as info is vague, so we are leaving timing flexible. We are reading all the trail info in advance but will refer to maps and notes daily once on the trail.
As for gear some things will be trial and error but I already have all my own gear that I will be using. I will get family to send any gear I need to swap or buy replacements along the way.
All the best, we might see you on the trail! Let me know if you want to chat prior to leaving. I live in Northland in Ngunguru, just near the Te Araroa and have done my share of hiking in the past (and am planning on doing the Te Araroa myself in the near future). I would love to offer my lawn to hikers to pitch a tent on, but have no idea of letting people know in advance. Have checked the Te Araroa website but seems they only list YHA options. I know there'd be heaps of people out there all over NZ willing offer their lawn, or even a bed for the night ... or is that not the done thing ... ie you are supposed to 'doing it rough'??

Anna Cherrynoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7042062332415444278.post-80168751866651464142016-02-22T23:48:57.845-05:002016-02-22T23:48:57.845-05:00Thanks Joe, this is really helpful, can't wait...Thanks Joe, this is really helpful, can't wait to thru-hike the TA!!Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17136249240203028135noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7042062332415444278.post-48602578967125517562016-02-22T23:46:59.189-05:002016-02-22T23:46:59.189-05:00This comment has been removed by the author.Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17136249240203028135noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7042062332415444278.post-37858720532023676622015-09-30T22:31:40.143-04:002015-09-30T22:31:40.143-04:00Hi Damo, I'm also thinking of doing the trail...Hi Damo, I'm also thinking of doing the trail around this time. Glad it rings true with other thru hikers, especially since this was my first.

Unfortunately, you'll need to apply for the visa in advance. The airlines generally won't let you on a flight without either a return ticket, or a visa that waives the requirement for a return ticket.

Check out http://tawiki.org/wiki/Visa. It links to a step-by-step guide for filling out the application. From Alaska, I might allow a little additional time. For the most part it is straightforward, with a couple of gotchas (the courier fee, and getting them to waive the return ticket requirement if necessary).
